Giuseppe Giacchetti (1890-1980)
Giacchetti studied at the Conservatorio die Musica Santa Cecilia and learned the art of violin making as a student of Rodolfo Fredi. Fredi is considered one of the leading violin makers of the Roman school; his instruments are distinguished by their meticulous construction and excellent tonal qualities.
After initially opening a workshop in Rome, Via Marsala No. 34, Giacchetti emigrated to France in 1920 and opened a workshop in Montreuil, near Paris. A few years later, he presumably returned to Rome. Throughout his career, Giacchetti used his Italian “ROMA” label, adding only the name of the place where he built the instrument, handwritten in ink.
